Kathryn is attending Xavier University where she is studying nursing. She is the daughter of Brian and Michelle Borla of Sharon Township.

Lillian is attending Ohio University where she is studying biology. She is the daughter of Ken and Helen Latkovic of Wadsworth City.

Jonathan is attending the University of Michigan where he is pursuing a degree in chemical engineering. He is the son of Gerald Wuchter and Kimberly Blair of Sharon Township.
Named Foundation Scholarships

Emma Hetkey
College of Wooster
Former Friends of Hinckley Library Scholarship ($1,000) — Applicants of the Library Science Scholarship, offered through by the Former Friends of the Hinckley Library, should pursue a degree in Information Sciences/Technology or Education. This year’s recipient was Emma Hetkey who is pursuing a degree in business and communications at the College of Wooster. She is the daughter of John and Patti Hetkey of Sharon Township.

Jordan Yu
Bowling Green State University
Victoria M. Jackson Performing Arts Scholarship ($1,000) —
This scholarship was established by the Jackson family in memory of their daughter, Victoria, who passed away in an auto accident in 2009. This scholarship is presented annually to an outstanding performing arts student. This year’s recipient was Jordan Yu who is studying education at Bowling Green State University. He is the son of Tony and Bernadette Yu of Sharon Township.

Mike Kudla Memorial Scholarship ($1,000) —
Mike Kudla was a 2002 Highland honors graduate and member of The Ohio State University championship football team. He went on to play for the NFL and have a successful business career. Recipients of this award must be passionate in their life goals, possess the qualities needed to persevere through life’s obstacles and the determination to make a difference by helping others in the community. Ellen Fuller is pursuing a degree in animal science at The Ohio State University. She is the daughter of Timothy and Lisa Fuller of Brunswick Hills.

Isabella Eshlerman
Kent State University
Hugh & Grace Eyerdom Memorial Scholarship ($1,000) —
This scholarship was created by Don and Edith Simmons in loving memory of Edith’s parents. The scholarship is presented to a student pursuing studies in horticulture, agriculture or other closely related field. Isabella Eshleman is attending Kent State University where she is studying environmental science. She is the daughter of Matt and Jami Eshleman of Sharon Township.

Kaitlin Herman
The Ohio State University
Steven J. Bilecky Memorial Scholarship ($1,500) —
Established by the Bilecky family in memory of their son, Steven, a 1988 graduate, applicants must demonstrate high academic achievement. Kaitlin Herman, daughter of John and Linda Herman of Wadsworth City, is currently majoring in biochemistry for pre-dentistry at The Ohio State University.

Henry Hummel
Bowling Green State University
William O. Wagar Memorial Math & Science Scholarship ($1,000) —
Inspired by 1983 graduate Bill Wagar who died of cancer in 2000, this scholarship is awarded to a senior majoring in a math or science-related field. Henry Hummel is attending Bowling Green State University where he is is studying pre-optometry. He is the son of Stephen and Katie Hummel of Granger Township.

Heather Brickman
The Ohio State University
Letha E. House Scholarship ($1,000) —
Mrs. House was a life-long resident of Medina County and was very interested in horticulture, specifically flowers and gardening. Recipients must pursue a career in horticulture or related field of study. Heather Brickman is currently studying agricultural and biological engineering at The Ohio State University. She is the daughter of Dan and Dianne Brickman of Sharon Township.

Simona Kozul
MIami University
Lalitha Chada Scholarship ($2,500) —
Offered to a senior who plans to pursue a career in a science-related field of study, this year’s recipient was Simona Kozul who is working toward a degree in engineering at Miami University. She is the daughter of Bogdan and Tanja Kozul of Hinckley Township.

Gabe Colbrunn
Kent State University
Alyssa & Justin Haun Memorial Scholarship ($2,500) —
This scholarship was established as a means to give back to the community that gave so much to the Haun family in the wake of the siblings’ tragic deaths in July 2018. This renewable scholarship is awarded to a college-bound senior pursuing a STEM course of study and one who has positively impacted others. Gabe Colbrunn was this year’s recipient. He is studying microtronic engineering at Kent State University and is the son of Robb and Joni Colbrunn of Hinckley Township

American University
George R. Ayres Memorial Achievement Scholarship ($3,000) —
These scholarships were created through the estate plan of long-time area resident George Ayres. The scholarships are offered to college-bound Highland seniors in the top 20% of their class who have demonstrated high achievement in scholastic activities, have a record of activities both in school and in the community, and who plan to pursue collegiate STEM studies. Sofiya is the daughter of Mark and Christine Cole of Granger Township and is studying international relations at the American University.

George R. Ayres Memorial Achievement Scholarship ($3,000) —
These scholarships were created through the estate plan of long-time area resident George Ayres. The scholarships are offered to college-bound Highland seniors in the top 20% of their class who have demonstrated high achievement in scholastic activities, have a record of activities both in school and in the community, and who plan to pursue collegiate STEM studies. Jason is the son of Daniel and Vickie Yen of Hinckley Township. He is studying computer science at the University of Michigan.

Made possible through the estate plan of long-time area resident George Ayres, these scholarships are available to Highland seniors in need of an opportunity of their own in order to pursue a professional/technical program, associates degree or traditional college course of study. Applicants explain what inspires them to learn and how this scholarship will impact their future educational and career opportunities. Brennan McCarthy and Evan Miceli were this year’s recipients. Brennan is studying data analysis at Cuyahoga Community College and is the son of Matthew and Shana McCarthy of Sharon Township

Chorba Family “Give Where You Live” Scholarship ($1,981) —
New this year, the Chorba family believes in supporting their local community. To honor their Highland education, they established the Chorba Family “Give Where You Live” Scholarship. Ever connecting people with their passions, Dale and his family created a two-year college scholarship that honors their legacy. The scholarship will be awarded to a graduating Highland senior with a 3.0 or better GPA, an athlete, band or orchestra member and who is pursuing collegiate study in business and/ or music. As a special honor to his alma maters, the scholarship award amounts will coincide with Dale’s graduation years: $1981, the first year, and $1985, the second year. Luke Norman was this year’s recipient. He is the son of Daniel and Julie Norman of Granger Township and is studying business at Ohio University.

William L. Kubinski Scholarship ($2,000) —
New in 2022, the William L. Kubinski Student-Athlete Scholarship pays tribute to the life of former Brunswick teacher and Highland coach, Bill Kubinski. It was his belief that sports provided invaluable life lessons — win, lose, pick yourself up, work hard and strive for greatness. This scholarship is awarded to a college bound Highland student who has excelled in the classroom and on the field of play and who is pursuing a career in education. Olivia Wolfgang was this year’s recipient. She is the daughter of Alta and Edythe Wolfgang of Sharon Township and is studying business at Bowling Green State University
